By Yumi Umiumare with Theatre Gumbo
& local and international Artists.
Be ready to get lost in this funky cross cultural emo shake up! DasSHOKU SHAKE! is the fourth work in the award winning DasSHOKU repertoire - the unique culture-crushing dementia, which has been recognized by audiences in sell-out seasons nationally and internationally since 1999. Dasshoku means ‘to bleach’.
Butoh Punkess Yumi Umiumare ignites her next infamous DasSHOKU Cabaret, bursting from the shaking earth. Osaka's legendary Theatre Gumbo, international guest artists from Japan plus four of Melbourne’s shock-toy acolytes bring things of darkness out into footlights. Jap-pop and white mysticism assault Buddhist Heart sutra! Comic! Bizarre! Does devastation transform us, cleanse us or bleach us?

The Last Fury, Artwork for UHT
The Last Fury is a self-commissioned artwork photographed and produced by Vikk Shayen for Union House Theatre's production 'The Fury'. Elements, scenes, and underlying themes from the production are stylistically incorporated into the image. Cast images and elements were shot in less than 2 hours with the help of the production crew at UHT and assisted by Michael King.
About the Production:
The Fury is presented by Union House Theatre
Written and devised by Melbourne University students
Directed by Tom Gutteridge
A tragicomic riff on a society suffering from terminal risk-aversion.
Inspired by Durrenmatt’s classic play, The Visit, a cotton-wool society is thrown into chaos by the arrival of Claire. She brings with her violence and danger – and is that a black panther? – but also responsibility, consequence and music. Is the price too high? An exploration of the paradox of our contemporary culture, The Fury is the product of an intensive devising process; a collaboration between student writers, the cast, the director and Melbourne rock band, The Call Up who will play live as part of the show.

A prison visit. A swamp of memory...
A mother visits her teenage son at the prison where he is serving time for crimes of violence. She struggles to speak of what consumes her while he, in turn, has his own secret that burns on his mind. Over the course of this visit, their love is tested and nothing will stay the same.
Wretch. Of the things we do for love and the things we do despite it.
“It’s a terrifying piece of theatre, troubling and unforgettable.”

Wind Blown, Laura Li
The collection was born with the concept of capturing the movement of contact between rushing winds with implicated force upon the skin. The aim of the collection is looking at ways wind affects different textiles.
The outcomes are deliberately designed to give a permanent illusion that illustrates this point of contact. In an attempt to record the impact of wind on a person’s skin, a piece of leather is molded onto a plastic mannequin and shaped to give the intended outcome.
It leads to an exaggerated silhouette that appears naturally blown onto a person’s body, highlighting the hidden form underneath the material.

Objecthood, the nostalgic joy of ownership
Ojbecthood, by Rose Megirian
Against the ever present background of consumerism ‘Objecthood’ is a small but insistent reminder of the nostalgic joy of ownership. From its inception as a Tumblr, ‘Objecthood’ explored the relationships between objects, individuals and the habits that entwine them.
Through the creation of weekly tasks inviting participants to revisit or explore the items and routines that define them, curator Rose Megirian has elicited intimate and confessional responses from her 63 participants. The many narratives entwine to surprise readers and participants alike by illuminating with unexpected tenderness and beauty domestic surroundings and simple daily choices.

Ultimate fate of the Energizer Bunny, Al Kerr Quartet
The title track from the Alastair Kerr Quartet's debut album The Ultimate Fate of... Recorded live at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club by Jem Savage. With Marc Hannaford (piano), Sam Zerna (bass), Pat Thiele (trumpet) and Al McGrath-Kerr (drums).
The Alastair Kerr Quartet is the latest project from the drummer and composer; a distinctly Australian sound, but with a hint of Brazilian and Cuban music apparent through the work of this ensemble. The group’s sound is underpinned by the responsive rhythm section of Kerr and Sam Zerna (bass), while Marc Hannaford’s energetic and highly rhythmic work on piano spurs trumpeter Pat Thiele in his improvisations – alternatively angular and cascading – in a band that uses delicacy and space in equal measure with intense, driving grooves.

Rhinoceros, UHT Production
Photography by Vikk Shayen
Written by Eugène Ionesco
By special arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd
Directed by Tom Gutteridge
In Ionesco’s absurdist classic, the main character Berenger tries to hold onto reality while the world around him goes crazy.
In this version of Rhinoceros, the text has been updated and the action is set in a shopping mall populated by assorted gangs, employees and shoppers. The interactions between these inhabitants become increasingly bizarre as the play progresses, demonstrating the strangeness of reality and what we see as ‘normal’.
Ionesco’s plays are often seen as reactions to the massive social upheaval resulting from war and an uncertain future. In Union House Theatre’s Rhinoceros the upheaval that drives the action is the current global crisis and fears of environmental disaster...
Director Tom Gutteridge,
set designer Claude Marcos, costume designer Ellen Strasser, lighting designer Tom Willis, sound designers Jason Montero and Dinesh de Silva with assistant director Julia Torpey.

The Evil Scientists Caleo & Wooley, J. Cage Musicircus
The Evil Scientists; a small excerpt from Miracle Man. By Bernard Caleo and Bruce Woolley as part of the 2007 John Cage Musicircus at BMW Edge, Melbourne. John Cage’s Musicircus is a large-scale simultaneous performance event involving musicians, dancers, visual artists, poets and a pony.
"Woolley and Caleo are equally talented performers, and totally in their element. As both the actors and adaptors, their command of and commitment to the material is evident, and they have a terrific chemistry, pulling off this complex show with astonishing slickness. Although each playing multiple roles and even swapping characters, Woolley primarily portrays Moran/Miracleman while Caleo mainly alternates as wife Liz, mad scientist Dr. Gargunza and Johnny Bates, the former sidekick Kid Miracleman who has since become profoundly evil.
